The Environmental Impact of Green Paint Selection
How Amazon Paint closes the loop on leftover paint — bypassing raw extraction, conserving energy, earning LEED credits, and reprocessing every container that comes through the Fridley facility.
At Amazon Paint, we take pride in every can of paint we recycle and repackage, and we strive to be as transparent as possible when it comes to helping our customers understand our cause and how they can contribute to it.

Whether you are a professional contractor trying to understand our batch variances or a local homeowner looking to clear out leftover paint, Amazon Paint is here to give you all the details you need to understand why recycled paint is both good for the environment and your wallet! Below, we’ve provided answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we tend to get from our clients. Feel free to contact us directly for answers to all your paint-related questions!
Our drop-off facility and processing plant is at 350 73rd Avenue NE, Fridley, Minnesota.
Households and contractors can also drop off leftover paint at any authorized household hazardous waste facility or participating retail location in the state — roughly 500 sites statewide, searchable with the official PaintCare ZIP-code locator.
There is no charge to the public, residents or painting contractors to drop off leftover paint at recycling locations — the PaintCare stewardship program is funded at the retail level.
The difference at our Fridley facility is capacity. Most retail hardware stores cap drop-offs at 5 gallons; we do not, and can take commercial truckloads.
Non-hazardous, water-based latex and acrylic architectural coatings. The paint must still be wet or fluid — not dried solid — and must arrive in its original container with the manufacturer's label intact and readable.
We legally cannot accept non-paint chemicals, automotive fluids, solvents, or hazardous materials. We also do not accept empty cans or paint that has completely dried out and hardened into solid waste bricks.
Finally, under state compliance guardrails, we strictly limit the volume of oil-based paints and architectural stains that a single individual can drop off per month.
Recycled paint skips the raw extraction phase. Over 90% of the material in a can of Amazon Select has already been made into paint once, saving the minerals, chemicals, water and energy it would take to manufacture new coatings from scratch.
Our paint carries a high post-consumer content, which can qualify a project for LEED credits, and our products have historically carried Green Seal certification.
Additional regional material credits may apply if the job site is within 500 miles of our Fridley plant.
Rejected post-consumer latex paint is treated with a super-absorbent polymer, solidified and ground down.
That material is then used either as alternative daily cover at municipal landfills, to suppress dust and odor, or processed into an alternative fuel for energy centers and cement kilns.
Empty metal cans are crushed on site and sent to scrap metal partners for reprocessing.
Black polypropylene cans go to Gopher Recycling to be ground into car battery covers; white plastic pails are ground into pellets used to make storage pallets and bread baskets.
No. We do not sell online. You can buy at our Fridley, Minnesota facility, or from a participating retailer near you — use the store locator to find one.
Amazon Paint is available through participating Habitat for Humanity ReStores and other independent retailers across the Midwest and around the country.
These are independent businesses. Product selection, inventory, pricing and store hours are determined by each location, so please contact the retailer before visiting.
Pricing varies by participating retailer and by order volume. Retailers set their own shelf prices, so contact the store directly for what it stocks and what it charges.
Recycled latex is an excellent value compared with many conventional new-paint options. For contractor and commercial quantities, talk with us and we will price the order around the product, packaging, volume and delivery you need.
Commercial property managers, professional painting contractors, apartment and multifamily owners, property maintenance companies, affordable-housing organizations and house flippers — buyers who need practical colors, repeat volume and dependable coverage on a working budget.
Orders are placed directly with us rather than through the website. Get in touch with the colors, container sizes and quantities you need, and we will confirm availability, packaging, pricing and timing.
To keep freight efficient, wholesale orders are built in multiples of our standard transit configurations: freight boxes packed with 125 cans, and pallets holding 32 pails.
No. Liquid paint is heavy and vulnerable to temperature damage, and parcel shipping costs more than the paint is worth. We ship on bulk freight configurations only — smaller quantities are available for pickup or from a participating retailer.
We regularly fulfill single orders up to 18 full pallets. We are not set up to supply multi-location national retail chains.
It depends on the order and the season. Tell us when you need the paint on site and we will confirm the order cutoff, lead time and whether it ships freight or is collected from our facility, FOB Fridley.
Amazon Paint is a high-solid recycled latex paint for interior and exterior architectural use. Every batch goes through a three-stage filtration process and quality-control sequence before it is packaged.
The paint cures to a flat/low-sheen matte finish that sits between a flat and an eggshell, and is washable. Coverage is 300 to 350 square feet per gallon.
The high solids content means it applies smoothly with a brush, roller or airless sprayer.
Our paint is blended from recovered stocks of unused water-based paint, so we do not offer custom color matching or on-demand tinting. We manage feedstock to hold our standard colors within a 5% variance.
For a consistent result, buy enough of one batch to finish the job. If you have to change batches mid-job, start in a corner and paint corner-to-corner so the transition is not visible.
Our latex paint is suited to interior and exterior drywall, wood, stucco and masonry, and can be used on concrete or metal that has been previously painted or primed.
We do not recommend standard latex paint — ours or anyone else's — on floors or kitchen cabinets unless a protective sealer or specialized topcoat is applied over it.
Since 1992, Amazon Paint has been recycling leftover and unused paint into products that hold up on real jobs, at a price that works for cost-conscious residential and commercial projects.
